Hydrocodone belongs to the group of medicines called narcotic analgesics (pain medicines). It acts on the central nervous system (CNS) to relieve pain, and stops or prevents cough.

Hydrocodone is a Scheduled III controlled substance; in some states, it is classified as a Scheduled II controlled substance for drug crimes.

When hydrocodone is used for a long time, it may become habit-forming, causing mental or physical dependence.

Hydrocodone is often used by drug seekers in combination with Carisoprodol to produce a euphoric effect.

Common brand names of hydrocodone are Lorcet, Lortab, Vicodin, Norco and Zydone.
